APRS

Automatic Position Reporting System

APRS was developed by Bob Bruninga, WB4APR, in the 1980's and 90's as a connectionless tactical digital communications channel for the exchange of real time information of immediate value in the local area. This single national channel is intended to be a general purpose resource for all aspects of ham radio about anything happening in the area. GPS was added in 1992 time frame when GPS units became afordable so that moving stations could be tracked. By 1997 Steve Dimse, K4HG and the Sproul Brothers W2UZ and KB2ICI integrated the local RF APRS reception into global distribution via the internet.

In 1998 Kenwood introduced the first series of integrated APRS radios to give handheld and mobile users front panel access to this information without having to carry a laptop. Further, mobiles and portables now had both local and global text messaging plus email from their keypads. In 2004, a sweeping initiative called the New-N paradigm was introduced to eliminate all of the obsolete and legacy digipeaters and to greatly improve the network. About the same time,

In the 16 years since APRS was formally introduced under its present name at the TAPR digital Communications conference, APRS has grown to encompass just about every aspect of Amateur Radio. So much has been written about APRS it would fill volumes. Even the original APRSdos docs when printed would be about 2 inches thick! This site alone contains more than 100 web pages of detail information. But in a nutshell, the best summary I can make is that APRS is not an end-in-itself! APRS is simply a single national (global) resource channel where all ham radio operators are exchanging information about what they are doing and what might be of interest to others nearby or across the country. Tune in and see what is happening!

This new APRS.ORG web page is an attempt to give some order to all the information about APRS and to maybe help in finding what you are after. It is hard to make discrete categories, since so much information cuts across many categories at the same time. SO if you dont find what you are looking for under one category, try one similar... If you are a new or an old user, however, please do not make the mistake of thinking of APRS as a vehicle tracking system only. It is the opposite... An infrormation resource! See all the misconceptions about APRS!
